Why do people always look for nicknames?

I have been answering questions on here for a while now and have seen a lot of people ask for their opinions on nicknames they could give their furture children. Now personally i hate nicknames and believe you should call your children what you intended to call them as that is their given name! if you call a child abigail but really want to call her abi for short then why not just name her abi in the first place? it is their name and should be kept that way! im luck in the way my name is spelt (aneliese) as when people say oh can i just call you anna or lisa i say no its not anna or lisa and my name is aneliese anyway! what are your opinions?
